WORLD SIGHT DAY

October 15

October 15th marks the International Day of the Blind and Visually Impaired in Serbia. Also known as the “White Stick Day”, this day in Serbia is marked by more than 12,000 blind and visually impaired people. The Member of Nis City Council in charge of social affairs Tijana Djordjevic Ilic said on this occasion that the City of Nis, within its jurisdiction, assisted the organizations of the blind and visually impaired through annual program activities. Thus, the project “One Easy Step” is currently under preparation, on the basis of which in certain parts of the city the tactile security fields will be built for the blind and visually impaired. This type of assistance involves the construction of tactile security fields near traffic intersections or pedestrian crossings that help people with this type of disability find it easier to navigate and safely cross the street. The activities undertaken by the City of Nis within its competencies and projects are also the affirmation of the Union of the Blind and Visually Impaired, as well as the overall protection of this category of population through the provision of legal aid, psycho-social support and meeting all their cultural, artistic, sports and recreational needs.
