The City of Nis joined the Association of European Cities of Culture (Alliance de Villes Européennes de Culture – AVEC). The goal of joining the Association is to adopt European quality standards in managing the cultural and historical heritage of the city, as well as managing current cultural creativity and developing them in accordance with the principles of sustainable development. _____________________ The City of Nis joined the organization European Cities against Drugs – ECAD in May 2007 at the 14th Conference of Mayors of the cities, the members of ECAD in Istanbul. ECAD – European Cities against Drugs is a leading European non-profit organization based in Sweden that promotes drug-free Europe and develops anti-drug abuse initiatives by supporting the United Nations Convention against the Legalization of Drugs. Energy Cities is a European association of local authorities that care about their energy future. It was established in 1990 and represents more than 1000 local authorities from 30 countries. The City of Nis is a member of the Association of Cities for Energy Efficiency and Promotion of Sustainable Energy Strategies through local activities since 2003.

The League of Historical Cities (LHC) was established in Kyoto, Japan in 1987. It provides cities from different cultures with a platform for bilateral cooperation and mutual learning. The League also acts as a think tank for bilateral cooperation and best practices. It aims to strengthen affiliations between historic cities to exchange knowledge and experience and ultimately, world peace by deepening mutual understanding and building on the common foundation of historical cities to strengthen affiliations between cities. The goal of joining the League of Historic Cities in 2009 is to promote the historical and cultural heritage of the City of Nis as well as to establish cooperation with other member cities.

The City of Nis is a member of the National Alliance for Local Economic Development (NALED), which is an independent, non-profit and non-partisan association of companies, municipalities and civil society organizations that jointly work on creating better living and working conditions in Serbia. Standing Conference of Towns and Municipalities (SCTM) is a national association of local authorities in Serbia, established in Belgrade in 1953 and reformed in 1998 with the aim of developing and improving local self-government, networking and cooperation between cities and municipalities in order to achieve common interests. SCTM is a gathering point of local self-governments for consideration of common issues, formulation and presentation of common interests. SCTM represent the interests of cities and municipalities and they are lobbying for the adoption of regulations and strategic documents that suit their needs. Local governments can count on quality services provided to them through training, consultations and advisory support, and the members, partners and the general public are well and timely informed about all issues of importance to local self-government. When it comes to the international level, SCTM pay special attention to representing the interests of local authorities in the negotiations for EU membership, in an effort to adequately present their opportunities and needs in this process.
